Saatva is one of the best selling mattresses for people suffering from conditions like back pain, scoliosis, sciatica, and even post-surgery. It’s a memory foam hybrid mattress that is tested and approved by orthopedic specialists and chiropractors. The reviews for saatva are extensive as its one of the few mattresses to be sold online. Saatva comes in firm and luxury firm models for heavy people. For most people, the medium-firm or luxury firm should do great. It’s one of the few mattresses which can take up to 500 lbs. The total weight limit of the mattress is 1000lbs with 500 on each side. Very few mattresses can handle that weight and still not sag. The steel coils are durable and with a warranty of 15 years, the saatva is one of the few mattresses which can be recommended without hesitance.

There are some mattresses which are good for the overweight individual these days. The big fig mattress is one among them. The nectar mattress is known to support good weight and then there is purple. The problem with all these mattresses are that they dont have any evidence on how they support individuals who are overweight and have a back pain problem. The Saatva HD mattress is not only great for people who are overweight but also has a string of research for those with back problems.

At first glance the Saatva HD may look a lot inefficient when you put them side by side to a big fig mattress. The lower number of coil counts, Lack of encased coils and the type of foam used may all seem to go in favor of the big fig mattress but when it comes to the quality of the coil, and the density of the foam used on a Saatva, they are all pointing towards a comfortable sleep for the heavier individual. For a company which has done years of research in the mattress industry, the Saatva is known to be very satisfactory for customers who have purchased the product. The reviews are for one , very positive from individuals who have purchased the Saatva HD . Apart from the reviews, the tests done show a very positive results for people who suffer from back pain related problems.

The Saatva HD comes with 20 year warranty and a 180 night trial. They are also great for hot sleepers, which are common in heavier individuals. The delivery is entirely free.

The Saatva HD has a mix of Talalay Latex with 5 zone support. You will find the Saatva HD to be more supportive based on your body weight. The core body(torso area) is made of high-density latex while the foot and head area are much softer. The Saatva HD is a Luxury mattress and not just another run of the mill mattress which puts together a few layers of coil and foam. You will feel the organic cotton pillow top to be soothing and give you a luxury feel. The mattress is 15.5 inches thick and not 13 inches like a big fig mattress and we all know how important it is to have a thick mattress for the heavier side of you.

The Saatva HD also has a dedicated perimeter edge support which is good. I wouldn’t put it as extremely good , but for a luxury mattress, and the need to keep the mattress comfortable, the edge support is perfect and does not feel like a piece of wood on the side

Best Memory Foam Mattress for Heavy People

A pure Memory foam mattress is an incredibly difficult choice to make. Most of the mattresses in the market are either too soft or too thin for a heavy person to be comfortable on. Memory foam mattresses were made to create the best cushioning effect for a person sleeping on it. Though the firmness can be adjusted, most of the mattresses in the market cater to the regular person with a normal weight between 130 and 200 lbs. For a person who is heavy, you need to look at a firm mattress. The foam should be conforming but should not sink the person into it.  It should be pressure relieving and easy to move on. The right foam mattress should have a firmness level of 7-8 for a person who is heavy while most mattresses stick on to a firmness level of 5.5-6.5 which is great for a person who is below 230 lbs but not for someone who is 300 or more.

Memory foam mattresses also have certain other problems. Heat retention is a major issue and to counter the heat, cooling technology is often used. This may include a gel infused foam or graphite or charcoal-infused foam among others. For a heavier person, the chances of heat retention are much higher because they tend to occupy more space in the bed. A cooler mattress is known to help people who are overweight sleep better. One other concern is the height of the mattress. Thinner mattresses are known to bottom out with a heavy person on it. Choose a mattress with more height. You cannot go wrong with this one. Any mattress above 10 inches should be good for a person who is heavy.

Best Latex Mattress for Heavy People

Latex mattresses are more durable and forgiving when it comes to heavy people. It has everything a memory foam mattress has to offer and a bit more. It’s conforming and retains its shape even after years of use. Unlike memory foam, the Latex mattresses usually do not sink or sag that easily. They are also much cooler than the memory foam mattresses in the market even without any special cooling technology. Latex mattresses are known to be available as a bit firmer option than memory foam mattresses. Latex mattresses come in 2 types. The Dunlop and Talalay. The Talalay latex mattresses are much softer than the Dunlop varieties. There are plenty of Dunlop varieties in the market as well as Talalay. For most people who are overweight, a Dunlop variety is a better option. It feels much firmer and supportive.

Unlike hybrid mattresses, the pure latex mattresses last a lot longer. With no springs and other parts involved, the foam tends to last a lot longer than hybrids and even memory foams. The good part of the latex mattress is it is completely natural. Latex comes from the rubber tree and is often organic. Companies also manufacture mattresses with organic cotton and organic wool to ensure that the entire mattress is free from chemicals. For a person who is heavy, these factors do matter a lot. Allergy and breathing problems are common in many of us who are overweight and an allergen-free mattress is simply a blessing.

While hybrid mattresses are not recommended for people with heavyweight problems, there are a few mattresses that can accommodate people in the range of 250-300 lbs. The Latex hybrid mattresses in the industry are not all perfect. Most of them are not suitable for people with weight issues. When checking to purchase a latex hybrid mattress ensure that the mattress has the required firmness and more importantly the steel gauge should be low. The coil should be strong enough to hold your weight and most mattresses will not be able to handle the weight of 250 +. ensure that the latex layer of the mattress is Dunlop for a firm feel. Talalay toppers can be used to make the mattress softer. In most cases, you will find the Dunlop layer comfortable if you are above 300 lbs.

While air mattresses are a hassle to maintain and the lifespan of the mattress is considerably less, it’s one of the few suited mattresses for people who are obese. Air mattresses can be easy to adjust when it comes to firmness and you can make it as firm or as soft as you want. This makes it a viable option for people who are heavy. If the mattress company says that it can handle 300 lbs, 400 lbs or 500 lbs, go ahead and buy it. You can be sure that you can adjust the firmness to your comfort. There are a few problems with air mattresses. The first and foremost is that it tends to lose firmness over a period of use. It also will become softer over the night when you sleep. While it may feel perfect when you get into the bed, chances are after a few hours it will lose a bit of pressure and you will sink in. This results in back problems over a period of time. When you purchase an air mattress ensure that these points are addressed. If you are purchasing an air mattress, also find out the warranty which comes with the mattress and the foundation required.

The best part of air mattresses is that they come with twin-side adjustable settings. You can have a firm setting and the other side can be soft. This is often a problem with people of different sizes. While one light person may require a plush feel, the heavy person will need a firm mattress. This is completely customizable on an air mattress.

Best Firm Innerspring mattress for heavy people

Innerspring mattresses were the go-to choices for beds a few decades ago because it was the only good option. Today things have changed. The options for mattress types are huge and the brands are over 1000 which creates extremely good mattresses of every type and quality. From cotton filled mattresses, coir mattresses, memory foam, air mattresses, water beds, latex mattresses, and a hybrid mattress which incorporates 2 or more of the mattress types are all in the market. Choosing an innerspring mattress is now limited to people who are on a low budget and cannot afford quality mattresses. The hybrid mattresses usually come with foam and coils and is an advanced version of the inner coil mattresses which were traditionally manufactured and marketed. Today Innerspring mattresses are not recommended for most people. Apart from the fact that it has very poor motion isolation, other factors like noise and sagging in mattresses all contribute to the bad quality of innerspring mattresses. For heavy people, specifically, the innerspring mattresses are not really a good choice or an option.

What type of mattress is best for heavy person

The right type of mattress for a heavy person would be a Latex mattress. If you are above 250 lbs, most other mattresses wouldn’t either support your weight or would not be too comfortable for you. Latex mattresses are highly responsive and durable. It’s also firmer than memory foam which makes it an excellent choice for people who are overweight. This does not mean that memory foam mattresses, hybrid mattresses, and inner coil mattresses are bad for heavy people. There are memory foam mattresses that are designed to handle heavier people. There are Hybrid mattresses like the Saatva HD which can handle a weight limit of up to 500 lbs. But as a general rule, you can expect most latex mattresses to suit your needs if you are a heavy person. Depending on your weight, you may want to opt for a mattress between a medium-firm and Firm in any type of mattress. The advantage of Latex mattress is that it’s very durable and for a person who is overweight, you want to ensure that the mattress doesn’t sag over time or sink you in the mattress when you sleep on it.

We will look at Latex mattresses, Latex hybrid mattresses, and specific brands in the memory foam mattress and hybrid category which are suitable for heavy people. As a general rule, most of these mattresses are medium-firm or firm and only suitable for people who are heavy. If you are below 200 lbs, you may want to go for a more plush option. Also, note that these are not bariatric mattresses. A bariatric mattress is crafted for specific needs just to suit obese, overweight people with health conditions. These mattresses are suitable for anyone and are not crafted only for obese people. Some of these mattresses also fall under the Luxury category.

If you are looking for a Pure Bariatric mattress, Check out the reviews on Bariatric beds here.

Best Mattress for Couples with different weight

Most mattresses are designed with uniform density on both sides. It’s hard to find a mattress that will have split comfort levels. If you are a couple with almost identical weight, you are in luck. You can pick up one mattress and be sure that it will most likely be good for both of you. The problem arises when one person is heavier than the other and significantly so. If the weight difference between partners is anywhere above 50 lbs. Chances are, one of you will face discomfort. Finding a balance in the mattress is one option and the second option would be to work out a split mattress. While split options may be the best for people with different weights, it’s uncomfortable to move around on the mattress. Chances are you will find it uncomfortable if you are an active couple involved in sex.

The best option would be to find the middle ground. If you prefer a firm mattress and your partner is light and prefers a much plush option, try the medium firm. If one of you prefers the medium firm and the other prefers the firm, purchase a firm and add a topper. Chances are slight modifications to the mattress will be comfortable for both. Consider purchasing a topper after you purchase the mattress. Always purchase a mattress either in between your liking or a mattress which is on the firmer side and add a topper later to adjust your comfort levels.

The best option for couples who are heavy is the saatva mattress. Saatva works great for most couples and is a wonderful option. If your partner prefers a softer mattress, consider adding a topper to the mattress. This will be a great addition for both of you. The topper makes the mattress much softer yet not disturbing the pressure relief features of the mattress. Most of all, it makes both of you comfortable. Saatva mattress offers Graphite, latex and memory foam toppers at saatva.com

Best adjustable mattress  that support a heavy person

The Best Adjustable Bases are ranked on features. Most adjustable bases are designed to handle weight up to 700lbs. For people around 350 lbs, this should be good enough if you are not going to be involved in a lot of action. While your mattress may be designed to handle more weight than your base, it’s recommended that you understand that the base is an integral part. While purchasing an adjustable base, check out the weight limit on the adjustable base and add the weight of the mattress to your weight. So if your weight is 300lbs and the mattress itself weighs 120 lbs, then you need a base that should be able to support 420 lbs. But if you have a partner too, with a weight of 200 lbs, you are looking at a base which can handle at least 620lbs

The best adjustable base for Heavy couples, up to 300 lbs each is the saatva adjustable base with the saatva mattress. The adjustable base can handle up to 850lbs which is the good weight capacity. There are a lot of limitations to a person who are overweight. Its hard to get the right sized chair, traveling becomes hard, even the cutlery seems to be too small to handle at times. Purchasing anything for a person who is overweight requires careful consideration. When purchasing a mattress, you find that most of them are designed for people of normal size and weight. There seems to be no size for a 300 lbs person which says Queen size for bigger individuals. You have to choose from the best available product which may suit your requirement. Well that was until lately.

Today there are a few companies that have products dedicated for heavier individuals. If you are overweight and are looking for a mattress then there are a few companies who design Mattresses targeted exactly for you. These mattresses are capable of handling your weight and making you feel pretty normal. But are there any companies that create a mattress specifically for overweight people who have back pain?

While there aren’t any companies that have dedicated themselves to creating a mattress specifically for back pain, there are companies which have done enough to ensure that they test their mattresses for people with back pain. This happens for normal mattresses and for mattresses designed for heavier individuals. They consider a few key factors while testing their mattresses and if they are compliant for people with back pain and specifically for those on the heavier side or overweight.

The best Mattresses for Heavy people with back problems should meet a few key characteristics. These characteristics are the same for normal people too but when it comes to a heavier person, the mattress material has to be a bit more dense and able to take the weight. The springs in the mattresses , if you are using a hybrid should be able to withstand your weight. The foam should not give in to the weight over time and crumble and the edge should be supportive. All these factors are considered in a mattress for a normal person but for a person who is overweight, these factors play an important role. Apart from the material used, its about the design too. For a person who is overweight, the mattress needs to be thick. It should be 12, 14 , 15 inches or even more. The thicker, the more comfortable the person is going to be. But be sure that its Thick but with poor support. Thin , unsupportive coils and foam which is not dense is going to be useless for a person who is heavy.

For a person with back pain, you should be looking at a mattress which is medium firm. While most companies who sell mattresses claim that their foam mattresses or hybrid mattresses are actually medium firm, for a person who is heavy, they may find that the mattress is actually soft. Oftentimes, spring mattresses which are medium firm would be as good as a thin pad for a heavy person. A good mattress should be Medium firm to you. If you are over 200lbs, a medium firm may feel soft while a firm mattress may be a bit too dense. You may want something in between.

Trying out a mattress is key when it comes to an overweight person. Purchasing online may or may not give you the right mattress. Talking to a person on the other end and ensuring that the mattress is actually going to work is key. Tell them about your back problem. Ensure that they have a return policy and you can try the mattress for a week or two before you decide. Most companies offer a 100 night trial. For people who are overweight, you would be able to pick out the few mattresses which are clearly not for you the first time you lay down on it. If it hits bottom, you know the mattress is not for you. Prepare to return it. Most companies wouldn’t even try to sell you a mattress if they think that it wouldn’t meet your purpose and the mattress wouldn’t take your weight limit, that is if you have spoken to a sales rep. Email them before you make a purchase and expect them to reply to your email. You will always have a clear evidence of the communication and they wouldn’t be able to go back on their word after the purchase is made and you want to return the product.

If the mattress passes the first night test, chances are that you actually find the mattress OK for the time being. But thats not the end of it. You need to ensure that its supportive for your back. Its unlikely that you find the results on the first night. Chances are the back pain has worsened because of the new mattress. Give the mattress at least 2-3 weeks time to get accustomed to your body and vice versa before you decide.

If your mattress is responsive and you can feel every part of your body touching while you lay down on it without excessive pressure on any part of your body, chances are the mattress will be good for your back. But don’t take our word for it. Try the mattress for 3-4 weeks. If you are still not comfortable with these mattresses, return them. But before you return the mattress be sure to understand what the problem was. Was it too firm? Was it too soft? Was it not responsive or there was pressure on some part of your body , more than the other. Understand everything you felt about the mattress. This can help a lot when you are out purchasing the next mattress. Maybe you want a much firmer mattress and the same company would be able to replace your existing mattress with a firmer one! Or maybe its a softer mattress you require.

How To Choose a Mattress for Overweight People

A good mattress for an overweight person involves a set of factors, completely different from those for a person with a normal weight below 130lbs. With heavyweight comes a range of other factors which has to be considered including, durability, density, and edge support which may not be of major concern if you are looking for a mattress to handle the normal weight. With extra weight comes to a lot of factors. A person’s body covers more space on the mattress, which makes it hard for the heat to dissipate. With extra heat comes the possibility of sweat accumulation and with that comes fungal or moss problems. For a heavy person, a mattress that is not thick will often bottom out. Meaning, he will feel the surface below the mattress if the mattress is thin. A thicker mattress with higher foam density is a requirement here. Chances are that the person will sink into the mattress if the foam is not dense enough to support the weight, thus a firm dense foam is required on the surface, much firmer than a normal mattress would use.  Apart from this, you will need to consider the comfort of sleeping positions. If you are used to sleeping on the sides, you don’t want a mattress which is good for back sleepers. Stomach sleepers often find it very difficult to choose a mattress. A firm mattress with a soft pillow or often, no pillow at all is suitable for this sleeping position. And if you are a couple, the decision is impossibly harder. Apart from all this, you need a foundation which will support your weight and we cannot indulge in the box springs which are terribly poor at handling weight. As if a mattress purchase decision was not hard enough, the decision of purchasing a mattress for a heavy person, takes things to a new level, altogether.

Let’s look at each of the factors which are important while making a mattress purchase for a heavy person.

  1. Quality Materials: The quality of the material used is directly related to the durability of your mattress. The quality of the coils in the Hybrid mattress, the encasing material in the coils, the type of foam used, the density, The latex quality, density and how its manufactured, chemicals used, the cotton in the cover and even the glue used to bind the layers together, all play a major role. For hand-tufted mattress and handcrafted mattress, the quality of work determines the life of the bed. Find a mattress that is reputed and in the industry for a longer period of time. These companies have evolved over time and have corrected their process of making mattresses better over time. They are time tested and their mattress can be vouched for in most cases. If they were to produce inferior products, chances are, they wouldn’t be in business for long. A company that is more than 10 years old often stands a chance of delivering quality products. These companies use quality material and value customer satisfaction. They take pride in the product and will not compromise on inferior material. You should ask questions before you purchase your mattress and the questions should be directly involving the quality of the mattress itself but also regarding the material used.
  2. Thickness. A normal mattress can be anywhere between 6 inches to 8 inches. But for a person who is heavy, you need a mattress which is more than 10 inches. The more the better when it comes to thickness. You will need a thicker mattress to handle your weight. This makes it harder for the mattress to bottom out. It directly influences your sleep too. You will not find it hard to move around a mattress which is thicker and firmer. There are thinner mattresses that will be able to handle heavyweight, but they will be more dense and firm, often not too comfortable to sleep on. Today, a luxury mattress can be anywhere between 13 inches to 17 inches. Get one which is at least 12 inches in height. You will not regret the extra height.
  3. Firmness is a relative concept when it comes to mattress selection and that’s one reason why it’s important that you don’t go by suggestions from others. You will need to feel the firmness levels yourself and determine if they are comfortable with you. What I find as a medium-firm may be extremely soft for you. I am 176lbs and I like a medium-firm mattress. A bit on the former side is ok for me but not on the plush side. But for someone who is 300 lbs, the medium-firm mattress may feel too soft and sleeping on a mattress that soft would end you up with back pain and there would be not much to say about the condition of the mattress after a year or two. As a general rule, Find a mattress that is as firm as you can and still comfortable. Any firmer and you wouldn’t be able to sleep on it. It should be near the edge of the firmness levels. Mattresses tend to become softer overtime. So expect to sleep on a perfectly comfortable mattress in 2 -4 weeks.
  4. Sleeping Positions: Sleeping positions often determine how firm your mattress needs to be. If you are a back sleeper, you will require a mattress which is medium firm. a mattress which is plush would go great for most side sleepers and a firm mattress is recommended for people who sleep on their stomachs. The firmness of the mattress is relative to each person’s weight. So if you are really heavy, opt for the firmest mattress if you are a stomach sleeper. A medium-firm if you are a side sleeper and a firm mattress with a topper if you are a person who sleeps on your back. While this may seem simple, it often becomes one of the biggest problems. Have you ever noticed that you tend to sleep on your back when you are testing a mattress? Even if you are a stomach sleeper, you end up checking your mattress laying down on your back. This often creates a problem later when you purchase a mattress with a 15-minute test. Most people end up complaining about a firm mattress when they side sleepers and have tested a mattress laying down on their back.
  5. Cooling and Temperature Regulation: If you are heavy, you will cover more surface space on your mattress. A mattress needs to air out and with more surface area covered, there is no space for the mattress to breathe. Heat builds up over time and you feel uncomfortable, waking up often at night and complaining about the heat. The material used in the mattress can play a role in heat retention and also the construction of the mattress itself. A Pure memory foam mattress tends to retain more heat than a Hybrid mattress which has enough space to breathe with all the coils in between. Latex mattresses are cooler than memory foam and gel-infused memory foam can dissipate heat and stop heat retention. While purchasing a mattress, ensure that you know the layers. Opt for a Gel foam mattress or a hybrid mattress if you are a heavy person. Latex mattresses are always the first choice and help regulate heat easily and naturally.
  6. Edge Support: Edge support is often overlooked in mattresses. We often test the mattress for firmness levels and comfort but don’t consider sitting down on a mattress. Edge support is also important if you don’t want to slip off your bed when you are sleeping near the edge. A good mattress should have reinforced edges. Often mattresses have firmer edges to ensure the edges are better supported. The reinforced edges also ensure that the mattress keeps its shapes and does not pop out from the side over time.
  7. Couples Considerations: It’s easier to make a decision when only one person is purchasing any product. When 2 people go shopping, the difference in opinion is common. From colors to look and feel, everything comes into play. While you are looking at the comfort of the mattress itself, your partner may be wondering about the firmness or the cover. Maybe your partner is allergic to memory foam or he/she has a completely different type of mattress in mind. And when your weights are different, everything becomes different. Choices will vary a lot. Finding the right mattress should be a joint decision and will require that both of you agree to the purchase. From comfort levels, firmness and the material used should be carefully addressed.

Consider Your Foundation

While mattresses are important, The foundation can be the spoiler. Before you even assemble your mattress, throw away your box springs. Get a new frame. A-frame which can handle your weight and the weight of your mattress. If you place your mattress on a box spring or a frame/foundation which does not support your mattress, chances are that you will ruin your mattress and the warranty may not cover it. If you are using a frame, ensure that the distance between the slats is not more than 2 inches. A flat surface is recommended but if there are slats, try to avoid spaces as much as possible. A heavy-duty frame is recommended, preferably steel or iron. Wooden frames are good if constructed well. Simple wooden frames may look good and suit the aesthetics of your bedroom, but it will not last as long as the ones which are constructed to endure weight and movement in bed. This is crucial if you are looking to have sex. A good foundation is imperative if you are going to put all the weight while in action. A heavy-duty mattress will also ensure that there is no noise and support your mattress well.
