Mattress For Spinal Health

Most of the people experiences back pain at some point in their lives. And according to the National Institutes of Health, 8 out of 10 people may have back pain some time in their life and I was no exception to it. Today, back pain is very common even among the healthiest people. This back pain symptoms aren’t due to a serious health issue such as arthritis or a fracture. But in fact the main causes could be very minor such as your mattress or your eating habits which are actually unexpected. I got aware about these surprising causes for back pain only after I had it and looked for their fixes. Here in this article learn about 10 surprising causes and their fixes from your everyday habits that could be contributing to your back pain.

Avocado Green Mattress

Cause: If your mattress is old, worn or if you start sinking into it then it is time to think about getting a new mattress. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a good mattress will last nine to ten years. A mattress that does not offer appropriate support to your back will reinforce poor posture while sleeping, leading to excessive strain on the spine and surrounding muscles. And also a very soft mattress causes your lower back to sink, throwing the spine out of alignment and stressing your muscles, ligaments and spinal joints.

Fix: Replace your old mattress regularly with one which is not very hard and not very soft. The hard mattress won’t allow the curves of your back to sink in, and the soft won’t provide the needed support. A memory foam topper can also be useful as it’ll outline your body, allowing your spine to remain straight all through the night.

Carrying A Huge Bag

Cause: If you are daily carrying all the needed as well as non required things in your carry bag, your back is feeling its pain. Moving with a heavy load carried on one side of body causes your shoulders to become imbalanced which further causes your spine uneven.

Fix: Using a lighter bag with only needed items in it or you can divide all your stuff and put into a purse and a tote, carrying them on each shoulder, to maintain balance. According to American Chiropractic Association your purse with everything included should not weigh more than 10 percent of your body weight.

Wearing Heels Or Flats

Cause: If you are wearing too high heels then it will force your back to bend as well as put stress on your joints. Flat sandals can also damage your back causing your feet to move from side to side and unbalancing your body weight.

Fix: You should be wearing a perfect heel height which you find the most comfortable for your foot.

Sitting Too Long

Cause: if you are having a desk job, then am sorry but it is actually bad for your health especially your back. Sitting too long for all day may feel nice to you but unconsciously you may sit in poor postures which cause your back muscles to weaken because of inactivity. Sitting as compared to standing, puts 40 percent more stress on your spine causing back pain.

The Most Comfortable Mattress

Fix: In office you can choose a standing table and work there for some time. You may also prefer sitting on your chair but with a lean back all through the day as if sitting at a 135 degree angle. This will reduce firmness of the discs in the spine. Also you should ensure to keep your head straight and not straining forward, when working on your computer.

Cause: Stress and depression have both been linked to increasing back pain. When you feel stress, your entire body specially the neck and back muscles contract and tightens. And if you feel stressed out for long then those tight muscles don’t get a chance to relax, causing back pain.

Fix: There are several proven methods to reduce your stress levels. The most common being natural remedies to reduce stress include exercise, meditation or try some therapies.

Skip Exercises

Cause: Exercise helps build your muscle tone that is necessary for supporting your back. When you skip your work out sessions, you experience stiffness and weaken muscles, worsening your spinal discs.

Fix: Perform workouts that help to strengthen your back and abdomen. You should try combining light cardio exercises with Pilates or focus on strength exercises. Performing yoga and stretching is also helpful in reducing back pain.

Eating Habits

Cause: The diet with surplus high-calorie and low-nutrient foods results into excessive weight. And your extra weight can put a heavy load on back. Extra weight around the lower body causes the pelvis to pull forward, creating stress for your lower back and finally leading to back pain. Obese people are at greater risk of having osteoarthritis.

Fix: Try reducing five to ten percent of your body weight to greatly improve your overall health. To get started follow few healthy eating habits like dividing your three big meals a day into four to five smaller meals, switch from butter to a healthier options (like coconut oil), use natural sweeteners like honey and drink green tea.

Cause: Smoking not only causes damage to your heart and lungs but also your back. Studies had found that smoking may damage tissue in the lower back, thus reducing circulation and the flow of nutrients to back muscles. It deprives cells of your body from getting oxygen, including those cells that are responsible to control your back movement. Studies show that smokers are three times more likely to develop chronic back pain than the non smokers.
Fix: The only fix to this cause is to quit smoking as well as all nicotine habit to experience any reduction in back pain.

Wrong Bra

Cause: Women with large breasts carry more weight in front which may cause back pain. This can lead a woman to hunch with a sore neck and back muscles leading to upper back problems. A well supported bra can actually lessen that forward hunch and relieve back pain. Studies shows that number of women wears the wrong size bra, and the right fit means the difference between sag and support.

Fix: Wearing a bra that provides you the right support can help you keep the weight closer to the body and also avoid back pain. You may also carry a tight fitting knapsack for your body. Tight fit will allow you to walk straight and maintain a better posture, resulting into low or no pain.

Cell Phones/ Laptops/ Tablets

Cause: Technology such as, cell phone, Smartphone, laptops, tablet is not good for your back and neck. Talking on your Cell phone, especially when you keep it between your shoulder and ear to balance it, this creates uneven pressure, causing neck pain. Using laptop and tablet also pushes you to keep a head-down position which strains the muscles in the neck. And gradually this neck pain extends all the way to your back. Also be careful if you text a lot, as this also puts lot of strain on your neck by looking down constantly.

Fix: Use earphones if you have to talk a lot on your Cell phone. Reduce text messages or try to hold your phone in front of you when texting to reduce the strain on your neck. When using laptop or tablet, take frequent breaks, and try to look straight ahead instead of down. Alternatively, you can also buy a stand to hold your laptop or tablet at a more convenient height and angle for your back.

I am sure these surprising causes must have helped you understand the real reason behind your back pain. So alleviate that back pain problem with its fixes mentioned right away here.

The chair relaxation

I like to call this chair relaxation. All you need is a chair or sofa to work with. Simply lie down on the yoga mat, if you have or on the floor as comfortable as possible. Raise your legs and rest them over the seat of the chair, from knee down stay in this position for a good 5-10 minutes and relax. The back should have proper support, while in this pose. You can take some pillows to support the back. This is best after a tiring day at work and will also release pressure on the back muscles. One thing you need to ensure is that the spine is aligned in a straight line.

Other home remedies for back pain are

  • Lie down on your back when you have the pain. The sleeping position has got a lot to do with the spinal pressure. Sleep on the back and have a support kept under the knees.
  • If you are a side sleeper, tuck in a pillow or cushion between your knees and draw the legs towards the chest area. a soft towel placed under the waist will also do.
  • Sleeping on the stomach is a big no for people who suffer back pain.

A good night’s sleep is a basic priority which is needed by every human being. But many times, we don’t get what we have wished for. Such troubles mainly could be due to our mattress itself. Many working professionals say, that waking up with a back pain has become a common habit for them. This kind of musculoskeletal discomfort is not restricted to adults only. Both young and adults have to suffer from lower, middle or upper back pains at least once in their lifetime.

Avocado Green Mattress

Studies shows that around 31 million Americans suffer from back pains at any one time. Besides, 83% of Britons shared their experiences of having worst back aches in their morning hours. The American Chiropractic Association estimated 40 – 60% people with trouble sleeping.

Causes of back pain

Back pain can happen from your neck to the hips. This is most common in the lower area. Mainly happens when the body is unable to maintain a proper posture. This bad posture finally affects the spine which causes pain in the shoulders, neck, lower, middle and upper back. It’s important that when lying down body lays flat with continuous support and equal contact (from the surface) in a balanced manner. When there are gaps between the body and the surface of the top cover, we are unable to get the full support. This will end up with joint pains in the morning.

Memory foam mattress

The memory foam mattress is topped with a layer of temperature –sensitive Visco material. Since, the material is affected by room temperature. You can feel the mattress cold and hard in your first experience. This is the second most popular mattress which is preferred by most of the people. As choices vary some persons avoid choosing such kinds of mattress mainly due to reasons like temperature variations. There are different types of memory foam mattress. Pure memory foam mattresses possess extra layers of memory foam. Hence is also called as memory foam-only mattresses.

Pros of Memory foam mattress

  • Spinal Alignment: Memory foam has the ability to maintain the correct alignment of the spine, by ensuring you a better and healthy night sleep.
  • Stress Relief: Highly effective for persons suffering from aches and pains.
  • Hot Therapy: One can enjoy a better sleep in the hot environment during winter season and cold sleep during sunny days.
  • Anti-Allergic: This mattress is filled with polyurethane foam which is safe and handy for the consumers suffering from allergies.

Cons of Memory foam mattress

  • Smell: The mattress is having a slight kind of smell. Since this is treated by chemicals. This smell might not be liked by many persons and they feel some kind of irritation.
  • Low support: People who prefer firm mattress may mostly say “no” to this kind of mattress. Memory foam is flexible where your body sinks into the mattress.
  • Sensitive to heat: This is not good for you if you sweat a lot during sleep hours resulting in a restless sleep.

Differences between firm and soft mattress

Always a mattress which keeps your back support firm should be chosen. Too soft mattress creates an uneven surface while lying down. Similarly, firmness will put more pressure on the body. This, in turn will enhance pain in different parts like back, neck and shoulders.

Whenever, I used to visit my family doctor for monthly checkups, I used to find many patients suffering from the same disorder. He mostly used to prescribe them certain medicines like pain killers. These medicines may feel good for a time being relief. But regular intake of such medicines will lead to the worst consequences in the future.

The Most Comfortable Mattress

Proven facts

Research proves that more than 20% of people are comfortable and have experienced some sort of relief from the pains. High density foam offers best support and proper spinal alignment. Even, a study done in 2010 shows the same result, where people using firm mattress layered with memory foam, proved significant improvement in both neck and shoulder pain.

Pressure points are a key factor

The mattress has the ability to mold with our body pressure and spread an equal body weight over the entire surface of the mattress. This manner helps the body from all types of strains (like back aches) and the critical pressure points of the body also gets protected and comforted. Thus, allowing you to sleep in a more comfortable way.

Sleeping on floor is better than sleeping on the mattress. Sounds ancient? Here are the reasons why it is not so but modern & cool

Disclosure: I may be compensated through the links in the post below, but the opinions are my own.

Mattress – Why Sleeping on the Floor is better than sleeping on a Mattress.

This article is all about why sleeping on floor is better than sleeping on a mattress.
In prehistoric era and even somewhere down the historic time, people used to sleep on the floor without the benefit of a comfortable mattress. Sheepskin was the most popular bedding for them. It kept them cool and made a comfortable surface to sleep on against the hard floor. Mattress came only as a luxury and was not a real part of the necessity, as it is today. It is still recommended to sleep on the floor than on the mattress for many reasons than one.

Avocado Green Mattress

I, myself am not a big fan of sleeping on the floor and prefer the comfort of the mattress anytime. I did try it a few times and I swear it is nothing sweet. But, to be fair, sleeping on floor was good and comfortable in its own way, when you really get used to it. It would hit you in the initial days and is easy to get used to, provided you are not an oldie. Yes, being young is a must to try the hard floor as sleep surface for the first time in the life. You will definitely wake up with sore muscles and pain initially. Then where would be the real benefits of sleeping on floor and how is it any better than the mattress? Let’s find out.

Let’s start with the advantages of sleeping on floor

  • The first remedy anyone might suggest for a bad back is to sleep on hard surface. The hard surface helps align the spine and reduce the stress and pressure that cause back pain. This is the main reason for the sleep-on-the-floor-recommendation. Reduction and prevention of neck and back pain is the highlight of sleeping on the floor.
  • Relief from scoliosis is another benefit of making the floor as your sleep surface. Another reason why sleeping on a mattress (a wrong mattress) can be bad for your spine.
  • Sleeping on the floor helps improve the blood circulation and makes the body healthier. It is also an excellent solution for sleep problems as the body need not adjust itself to the sleep surface and can relax faster.
  • Sleep posture will be improved gradually. The gravity provides the natural support and makes a feel good sensation.
  • Floor makes the ideal bed for the hotter season. There will be no more heated beds. Another best part is you could even get out to the terrace or balcony and still your bed, uh, floor, is with you.
  • The best advantage of getting used to sleeping on floor is that the next time you play guest, you don’t have to worry about a mattress or use up their brand new couch. Instead, spread the blanket on the floor and you are ready to sleep.

Disadvantages of floor-sleeping

The disadvantage is that it is not comfortable, for majority. The pre-historic days, people are unaware of the luxury of a comfortable mattress. But we know what a mattress feels like. The discomfort could distract us more often.

Winter could be a problem. The floor gets cold easily and could cause health issues as well. This problem has its solutions, like sheep skin. Sheepskin rug or comforter is available in the market. Make use of them to make a cold proof surface.

Sleeping on the sides could be a problem. It uneasy, uncomfortable and is recommended against it. Sleeping on the back is the preferred position. People who are side sleepers may find painful hips after sleeping on the floor. It seems floor is not for everyone.

Sleeping on floor culture still prevails

The floor as sleep surface is still being followed in many places around the world. There still are places where people are yet to come out of the olden days. For them that’s the only option available and if they can sleep on the floor, then why not us? If the floor could give you the needed support, why spend thousands on bed and mattress that would also cause air pollution in many ways. People who have back problems spend huge amount of the firm mattress, why, when they could easily use their floor to relieve the pain.

The Most Comfortable Mattress

Sleeping on floor does not mean it in the literal sense. You are not supposed to sleep ON the floor directly, use a blanket, comforter, mat etc. to make a bed. The idea is to make the earth give you the support. The blankets and the likes will save you from the cold surface. A futon mattress would also do well. Futon is still used in Japan as primary bedding. It is hard and also thin to make the feel of sleeping on the floor.

Tips for a comfortable sleep on the floor

  • Expect discomfort initially. It would go as you get used to the floor surface.
  • Do not give up after the first few days. If you give up, you will go through the same when you try it next time.
  • Go on sleeping on the floor for at least 2 weeks minimum. Once you get used to the floor, switch the mattress and floor several times in a month before you give up the bed completely.
  • The best surface is yoga mat to use on the floor.
  • It is hard to sleep without a pillow and sleeping on the floor does not have a pillow mentioned with it. So get the pillow initially, gradually reduce its thickness and later switch to small cushions and then ultimately to no pillow or cushion status.
  • Concrete, ceramic floors are not fit to sleep on. The best floor is the wooden floors for comfortable sleep.

My experience with floor surface

I tried sleeping on floor recently. It is rather, I was forced to try, guests and all you know! We have carpet spread on the floor. We made a bed over it with some blankets. It was hell for the first day, okay for the second day and its-not-bad by the third. Just because I happened to came across these benefits of floor on sleep, we continued on the floor for over a week. I must say, except for the first two days, floor felt good under me.

I am a disturbed sleeper and had no disturbances for the duration I spent on the floor. It was not difficult to get sleep, but was not easy either. I would not recommend it to all, as it is not comfortable but I would recommend you all to try it once a while. It will make you feel closer to the nature and will also take you down the memory lane through your experiences. Sleep on floor will definitely make you realize the value of life and all its luxuries.

Detensor Floor Mats

Detensor Floor mats is a spinal traction device and back therapy system It provides support to the back through traction or decompression. It also provides cervical support and also support for the lower legs. This mat can be spread on any hard surface like the floor and the person lies down on the mat for a specified period of time.

The Detensor floor mat has no side effects. It provides gentle traction and relieves lower back pain. it has been used in tried and tested in Europe and USA for many years.

Back Pain – Symptoms and Causes

Problems are common in everyone’s life but the way you deal with it shows your quality and defines the complete you. There is nothing in this world that cannot be handled. So whether you chose to sit back in grief or ascend from the pain is exclusively in your hands. So gear up lets deal with back pain with full zest.

Avocado Green Mattress

Every individual in this globe would have back pain as an uninvited visitor at some point of time. This ailment slowly creeps up into your body through different ways. When this ailment leashes out its wrath no man can sleep peacefully nor enjoy their life to the fullest.

So grab your seats tight and give me just 5 minutes!! You will get to know what to avoid and what are the major reasons that is triggering the back pain.

Lets us start analyzing one by one

How many hours do you get to sleep at night?

Yeah count it genuinely and keep a note of it aside on a paper. It is generally said that a human body requires at least 8 hours of sleep a day or at the minimum level 6 hours. Prior to the advent of mobiles, tablets and phablets people used to sleep early but now they have a habit of clinging to such devices with all those beep sounds rumbling in their bed rooms. Common people, this is not the right way to treat your body and in particular the spine. It aint any piece of equipment that can be replaced but surely can be repaired. So a night full of rest and peaceful sleep is the only remedy to mend the strained muscles, and hardworking cells to get things straight. Don’t take that much deserved rest from them after all they work for your wellbeing.

How many hours a week do you indulge in physical activities?

Keep a note of that on the same paper so that at last you can understand where you stand. So coming to the point, exercise is a common strategy that all should adopt for a better life and healthy body. Routine exercises can help to stretch those twisted and bent nerves, allow blood circulation, and enhance muscle power and burn superfluous fats. When all the core muscles at the back are strong enough they can hold up the spine better and help to prevent back aches. As a rule of thumb at least 4 hours a week must be dedicated for exercises like walking, jogging .If you find these boring then grab a shovel or a spade and start digging in your garden.

How much do you weigh?

Check your weight and note it down. So as you as all know the spine supports the whole body to stand straight and move around in synchronization. It does this all day long when you are awake and gets to rest only while you are at sleep. The whole weight is actually carried by the spine and that is the reason why it gets hit with pain. If you have a BMI that qualifies you as overweight or obese then probably your back pain isn’t going to go away unless you shed some pounds. Call a nutritionist or a fitness trainer right away to shed your stubborn pounds.

The Most Comfortable Mattress

How old is your mattress?

Again make a note of that and keep aside. I know you love your old mattress a lot and you should also be aware of the fact that a mattress can stay healthy and in shape only for around 6 years on an average. With the passage of time mattress begins to sag here and there which is the root cause of back pains. If your mattress isn’t able to adjust or bend according to the curvature of the spine then it is sure going to pose trouble.

A “not so firm not so soft mattress” is an ideal choice for maintaining a healthy spine. So chuck your old mattress off to replace with a new one. If you find that your budget isn’t enough to afford a new brand mattress then consider buying a mattress topper to cover up your old mattress.

How demanding is your job?

Do you sit in a chair for long hours if so how much time? Do you carry weights or do the same monotonous task for long periods? Again note them down on that paper.

Handling weights/ sitting on a chair for never ending times, all these can create havoc on your spinal cord. It isn’t possible to get rid of these jobs as you survive on the bread they offer. But you can surely take a few breaks to stretch your limbs, stare at some far objects to ease off the strain from your eyes. Walking a few steps or doing something else can help to relax your muscles and improve blood circulation. This is applicable to nursing mothers and homemakers who have to carry weights and do house hold chores 24/7 and 365 days without a break. They really need to take a break in between to get some rest.

Tips For Back Problems

Now calculate all the results that you have noted on the paper and understand what your body needs. Here are a few habits that you need to change to get rid of back pain:

  • Lying on your side with hands supporting your head with an endless inquiry on your tablets or laptops. This is mostly done by all and is the major cause of having neck and back pains. Trust me once you quit doing this you will begin to feel the change.
  • Highly processed foods and junk foods lead to poor nutrition and it results in back pain. Your spine needs good nourishment in the form of minerals and vitamins. So stack yourself with natural stuffs which are plentiful with what our body needs.
  • Replace your shoes periodically when it is torn out and don’t try to save money on that. Worn out shoes or uncalled for shoes can cause back pain and ankle pain.
  • You like to smoke? Well it is so cool that it can actually stop sending oxygen to your cells all around the body. Don’t think that it is just the lungs and heart that gets affected but even your spine can get damaged with low oxygen levels. Still do you like to smoke?
  • Chose to gulp the zero calorie drink “pure water “around 8 glasses a day to keep all ailments at bay.
  • Turn off your mobiles and all electronic gadgets into flight mode so that they don’t beep on your ears.
  • Get into the habit of consuming natural supplements or multivitamins after consulting with your health expert.

Tips For Women

  • Ladies are crazy about hand bags but comprehend the fact, it might be a fashion statement but holding it right there can irk your nerves and kick start back pain and shoulder pain.
  • Again a tip for ladies while selecting a bra, use some common sense instead of going behind a brand or a TV commercial. Buy the perfect one which supports your breast size and has a definite cup which can hold it perfectly. Don’t buy a bra which is too tight or too lose but chose the correct one after trying it out.

Majority of the back pain are caused by carelessness, lack of knowledge towards our health and day to day routines. So if you get these things straight everything will seem to be perfect and in sound health.

Mattress For Spinal Health

This is not something you hear often especially from a person with curved spine who goes through excruciating pain almost every day. At the age of 13, Emily had to undergo a surgery that changed her whole life. To make the situation worse, her sister, Audrey, too was suffering from scoliosis that had to undergo surgery the very next day. Read the whole story about choosing mattress for Scoliosis patients.

As it always goes, blood tests, x-rays were carried on till the day of surgery. Frequent pleading and excuses by the kids didn’t work and the surgeries were fixed. Fortunately for them, the doctors and the staff were absolutely supportive and composed that eased the worries from children. I am a true believer that supporting words from doctors and staff can help anyone in chucking out worries and infuse a certain faith in overcoming lurking fears. As good fate had it, the operation went successful and the results were impeccable.

Otho Infographic_August 2015

Planning to become a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, Emily has begun volunteering at Children’s Hospital and is assisting many kids suffering from scoliosis to combat their distress.

This is just one of the many stories. Scoliosis affects 2-3% of the 7 million population of the United States with patients including infants to teenage adults. Females are 8 times more likely to develop a curve magnitude that cries for treatment.

Scoliosis Myths

There are many myths surrounding scoliosis and its causes. Let me tell you that it does not occur by watching too much TV or munching too much junk food and certainly is NOT contagious.slide_12

Few claim that soft mattress can cause curvature of the spine and lead to scoliosis but that’s not true. However, there are correct sleeping positions for Scoliosis patients that will help in alleviating the back pain. Opting for the right mattress for Scoliosis patients also plays a vital role in cutting down pressure on the spinal area.

Scoliosis – Causes and Treatment

Scoliosis occurs due to hereditary factors and this ‘abnormal curve’ sadly goes unnoticed during the initial years and becoming evident only during adolescent or in teens.

Know, that surgery is not the only option for you. Pain killers, increasing the strength and flexibility of the spine, weight loss, chiropractic therapies etc. are few of the remedies to cut down the impact of scoliosis and lead a better life. Bracing (using a corset brace to eliminate motion of the back) is also a popular remedy for those dealing with back pain.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Scoliosis patients

Keep in mind that the patient’s sleeping position has nothing to do with treating or worsening the condition. However, a comfortable and sufficient sleep has its own benefits. And without a doubt, a mattress has a vital role in supporting a good night’s sleep especially with scoliosis patients. If you are looking for Mattress for Scoliosis patients, scroll down to know all about it.

Here are five scoliosis tips for a better sleep and choosing the right mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

It is not at all a wise decision to sleep on your tummy. This not only throws the natural curvature alignment of the spine to an abnormal bend but can also increase the neck and back pain.

Perfect mattress

If you are using an old mattress that has been passed on from generations or simply a wrong mattress, its time to retire them. Choose a mattress that supports the back’s neutral position. If you are in a mattress store, don’t be embarrassed and lay down for a while. Connect with the mattress and feel how it relates to you. Choose the mattress that’s worth every penny you pay.

Mattress Toppers

If you already purchased a mattress, you can always go with mattress toppers. Bear in mind to opt for organic cotton/wool that wicks away excess heat and keeps your body cool especially at hot humid climates. This is very much important for treating scoliosis patients. Ensure that the topper is only 1-3 inches thick. Excessive thickness might feel good at first, but trust me it does not give the neck and spine much needed support.

Sleeping postures

Depending on the severity, your doctor may recommend you to switch to side sleeping or on your back. Propping a pillow under or in between your legs can give you a craved comfort level. It is said that people dealing with scoliosis have a slight degree of hyperkyphosis (a tiny hunched back deformity) that is related with the spinal curvature. With the help of a firmer mattress, roundedness of the spine can easily be eliminated.

Support your head and neck

Do not go for large pillows. They will push your head forward and disrupt the spine alignment. It can also hinder natural breathing process while promoting severe neck pain. Cervical pillows are the best. This is because they optimize REM and come with many hypoallergenic fabric that ensure good cervical health. They also shoo away any respiratory or allergic disease as well.

Best Mattress for Scoliosis patients

I do understand that the comfort level differs; for instance, some prefer a firmer mattress while some like it soft. But one type of mattress that is constantly termed best mattress for scoliosis patients is the memory foam.

Today’s mattress are made out of polyurethane with other chemicals that boost the foam’s viscosity. The ability of memory foam mattress is to distribute the body weight thus eliminating the severity in certain pressure points of the body. It also contours to your body shape and bounces back to its original position once you are up.

What do you get? A comfortable sleep without keeping you tossing and turning. placing the body in painless position. You won’t feel like climbing out of bed with this type of mattress. Memory foam mattresses are not just beneficial for those dealing with scoliosis but for those with back pains, arthritis or people dealing with sleep disorders.

Any mattress that you choose has to give good spinal support. The level of firmness will depend upon the individual preference. Any mattress will have to be replaced after 8-10 years of use, else the mattress will begin to sag. Heavier people will need mattresses which are more firm. The website Justsleepbeds.com gives details of the firmness level to find the recommended best bed for scoliosis patients and those suffering from back pain by Dr. Hali.

Bottomline – Mattress for Scoliosis patients

To conclude, optimum comfort and support is necessary while choosing the right mattress. While trying on a new mattress for Scoliosis patients, lay down for 15-20 minutes and ensure if its the comfy enough to support your back. Not two people are same. While few prefer firm mattress, studies show that they increase the back pain. It is always better to go for medium firm mattress or memory foam mattress. Such mattresses are proven to deliver optimum relief in scoliosis patients than firm mattress. This is because medium firm mattress allows the shoulder and hips to sink lightly than firmer ones that can cause pains or aches in pressure points.

Always remember, it comes down to your health and do not let a smooth talking salesperson to get you away with the wrong mattress.

  • The thickness of the mattress is one important factor to look for when heavy people buy mattresses. The thickness of the mattress should be at least 12”(people with normal weight of under 200 pounds can manage with mattresses of about 10” thickness). Thicker mattresses provide better support because of the pressure that their weight creates on the mattress.
  • The firmness level is dependent on your sleeping positions like whether you like to sleep on the side, back or on the stomach. Most of the heavy people prefer medium to medium firm as these mattresses support their weight better and give them more support.
  • Mattresses with better edge support are better for heavy people as it will help while sitting on the edge and also prevent sagging or collapse when sitting on the edge. Mattresses with coil-on-coil, spring, or a combination of these two will offer the best edge support.
  • Heavy people need mattresses that do not retain heat. The mattresses that do not retain heat are memory foam mattresses, spring mattresses, latex, advanced open cell memory foam or some mattresses that utilise gel or other cooling agents. These types of mattresses are more comfortable for heavy people.

  • Memory foam mattresses provides good contouring support and pain relief. It is especially effective if the memory foam is of higher density. The disadvantage of this mattress is that heavier people may sink and make their movement difficult. • Latex mattresses are strong and durable. They are cooler than memory foam mattresses. The advantage is that the latex foam need not be as thick as the memory foam mattresses. Built in pumps is an added advantage. Sleep Number, Sound Asleep, Serta all have good air bed for obese people.
  • Water beds are also liked by heavy people. They should look for water beds which are strong and not look for only thickness
  • Inner Spring mattresses rate lower than the above mentioned mattresses since they tend to sag more and hence become uncomfortable and cause pain. It also makes more noise when used by heavier people. Innerspring mattresses with a coil count of 600 or above for a queen sized bed is more comfortable for heavier people
  • Futons mattresses are suitable only for heavy people who sleep on their side. The supporting frames will not support very heavy weight, but the mattresses are very firm and is liked by heavy people who like firm mattresses.

You lose weight when you sleep

Here is a good reason to check your weight in morning and not in evening time. You just don’t lose weight by sweating but while breathing humid air as well. However, if you get only 4-5 hours of sleep, then you will be adding up pounds in your body even if you eat healthy. For optimum weight loss, do not just implement a smart diet but also opt for a good 7-8 hours of sleep at night. NO, you can’t nap in afternoon to lose weight, it doesn’t count.

Your body temperature drops

Dr. Micheal Breus, PhD who is a sleep specialist and psychologist says that the core body temperature begins to drop when we begin to fall asleep. It will pass on the message to the brain to release the melatonin that affects the sleep-wake cycle called the circadian rhythm. This will tell you that its time to hit the sack. Did you know that your body temperature is the lowest around 2.30 am? If you are able to program your thermostat to rise a degree for a couple of hours, its well and good or else you will be pulling your partner’s covers for getting that extra warmth.

Blood pressure and heart rate goes down

Your body doesn’t need to carry on hard work when you sleep. Hence, it is quite natural that these functions automatically slow down. Your blood pressure goes down. This is to provide your cardiac muscle and other circulatory systems proper relaxation which they need. People who are dealing with high blood pressure need good 7 hours of peaceful sleep to reduce risk factors such as heart disease. If you or anyone in your family suffer from sleep apnea, make sure to get treatment right away as a precautionary measure.

Your bodily muscles get paralyzed, though temporarily

Don’t be scared. This is only to keep you away from clawing away the bedsheets while having a nightmare, says Lisa Shives, MD, an internist and medical expert for SleepBetter.org. Jimmy Kimmel told Esquire magazine about how he struggled with narcolepsy. He would doze off at meetings, driving and other odd timings completely losing focus of his life. So trust me this is one type of paralysis you want your body to undergo at night.

You get sexually aroused when you sleep

Just as men get aroused during REM sleep, it is also for women to get sexually stimulated during this sleep stage. Your brain is actually more active during REM sleep. This is basically because (a) you are dreaming and (b) it needs more oxygen. This will improve the blood flow in your body. There is clitoral engorgement as blood rushes to that area and causes a swelling. Does it mean that you will have an impromptu orgasm right there at the middle of the night? Yup, that sounds right.

You will have a full body spasm

Have you experienced a jerking sensation as if you are about to fall just when you sleep? You wake up all of a sudden and wonder what it is. Don’t worry it is absolutely normal, says Dr. Shives. 70% of people experience this process. This is because the muscles suddenly contract (also called hypnic jerk). Ssome scientists say that it is completely normal and cannot be avoided. Yet, few feel it is due to proper sleep routine. So next time as a precautionary measure, give a little space between you and your partner or you might shake each other awake.
